Coffeehouse Cinema at USC brings the inaugural Coffeehouse Cinema lineup to the USC School of Cinematic Arts for a special evening celebrating independent filmmaking, emerging voices, and the creative journeys behind four acclaimed short films. The program features work spanning comedy, documentary, and emotionally grounded storytelling. Following the screening, the filmmakers will discuss the inspiration behind their films, the process of bringing each project to life, and how short-form storytelling has contributed to their broader creative careers.

This summer, Will Gluck, the filmmaker of Anyone but You and Easy A, celebrates modern romantic comedy on the big screen with a fresh, witty, swoony original film about searching for love on the least romantic night of the year. Academy Award® nominee Monica Barbaro (A Complete Unknown, Top Gun: Maverick) and BAFTA nominee Callum Turner (Masters of the Air, Fantastic Beasts franchise) star as Allie and Owen, two love-starved strangers who crash into each other in an ever-so-slightly fictionalized New York City on the one night of the year when single people are allowed to have sex. Recently dumped Owen and hopeful romantic Allie might be the only two singles in the city looking for more than just a quick encounter. They both feel a spark when they meet, but a series of missteps and side quests complicate their night, keeping them apart. As they each race toward and away from each other across the city, they just might discover that the one thing they want most is closer than they think.

With their sophomore feature, Shatara Michelle Ford (TEST PATTERN) puts their singular stamp on the American road movie. After an unceremonious layoff, Z (Denée Benton, “The Gilded Age”) embarks on a trip across the Midwestern United States in search of a friend that has seemingly disappeared off the grid. Traveling with her two closest friends, these three queer black femmes find their priorities tested as shapeshifting threats in each city expose (inter)personal and ideological fractures. Tender and expansive, Ford has created an ode to chosen family and the radical act of claiming space to dream – and exist – beyond the systems of an increasingly fraught country.

Tommy, a swaggering Taiwanese YouTuber (played by Taiwan’s heartthrob JC LIN) who fakes exorcisms for fame, discovers his tricks mean nothing when his girlfriend Arumi (played by Taiwan ingenue Regina Lei) is possessed by a real Indian demon. Forced to join forces with Sanjay, a skeptical coder and reluctant heir to a legendary exorcist clan (played India’s latest hot superstar Arjan Bajwa), they dive into a whirlwind of mystical temples and seaside villages where ghosts giggle and gods rage. A delirious fusion of kung-fu mayhem and Bollywood splendor where horror waltzes with humor, and the divine can’t resist the dance.

This Fall 2026 semester, the School of Cinematic Arts will offer a very special course called CTCS-466: Theatrical Film Symposium, a four-unit elective class open for enrollment to ALL USC STUDENTS OF ANY MAJOR that brings you face-to-face with leading film directors, writers, producers, and actors working today. Throughout the semester, students will watch a wide selection of new film releases, followed by exclusive Q&As with the creative teams behind them.
