Metropolitan Opera 2008-2009 Live in HD Broadcast Series

The USC School of Cinematic Arts and the Metropolitan Opera invite you to the 2008-2009 Live in HD Broadcast Series



Presented in HD and 5.1 sound, live from the Metropolitan Opera in New York.

Admission is free, although we require that you reserve seats electronically. Please do not attempt to reserve seats via telephone or e-mail. Reservations may be placed through the webpages for each individual opera.

Please note that we will NOT be screening the Opening Night Gala on September 22nd, or the performances of Salome (October 11), Thais (December 20), La Rondine (January 10), Lucia di Lammermoor (February 7) or La Cenerentola (May 9).


Saturday, November 8, 2008: John Adams' Doctor Atomic
John Adams’s contemporary masterpiece explores a momentous episode of modern history: the creation of the atomic bomb. Director Penny Woolcock makes her Met debut with this gripping story that changed the course of history. Baritone Gerald Finley, above, plays J. Robert Oppenheimer, the title character. Approximate running time: 3 hours, 21 minutes. In English, with English subtitles.

Saturday, November 22, 2008: Hector Berlioz's La Damnation de Faust
Robert Lepage, one of theater’s most imaginative directors, applies his artistry to Berlioz’s contemplation of good and evil. Using projections, Lepage has created a vision for La Damnation de Faust that seamlessly marries art and technology. Marcello Giordani stars in the title role opposite Susan Graham as Marguerite and John Relyea as Méphistophélès. James Levine conducts this rarely staged masterwork. Approximate running time: 2 hours, 45 minutes. In French, with English subtitles. There will be a pre-show panel discussion about the opera in Norris Cinema Theatre, hosted by the USC Thornton School of Music.

Saturday, January 24, 2009: Christoph Willbald Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice
Mark Morris’s acclaimed production returns! This complete vision for Gluck, with choreography by Morris and costumes by Isaac Mizrahi, features the artistry of Stephanie Blythe in the title role. The alluring Danielle de Niese is Orfeo’s adored wife, Euridice, who inspires the hero to face the underworld for her sake. Music Director James Levine conducts. Approximate running time: 1 hour, 31 minutes. In Italian, with English subtitles.



Saturday, March 7, 2009: Giacomo Puccini's Madama Butterfly
The riveting singing actress Patricia Racette returns to the title role of Anthony Minghella’s stunning production, a new classic of the Met repertory. Cristina Gallardo-Domâs, the original Butterfly of the production when it opened the 2006–07 season, shares the run. Approximate running time: 3 hours, 23 minutes. In Italian, with English subtitles. There will be a pre-show panel discussion about the opera in Norris Cinema Theatre, hosted by the USC Thornton School of Music.

Saturday, March 21, 2009: Bellini's La Sonnambula
Mary Zimmerman, who directed Natalie Dessay in last season’s hit new production of Lucia di Lammermoor, underlines La Sonnambula’s dual elements of sleep and wakefulness in an intriguing staging set in the present. Bellini’s hauntingly lyrical score soars as performed by Dessay and Juan Diego Flórez, back from their sensational run together in La Fille du Régiment in leading opera houses around the world. Approximate running time: 2 hours, 30 minutes. In Italian, with English subtitles.

ABOUT CHECK-IN & RESERVATIONS

All screenings are presented free of charge and are open to all. The theater will be OVERBOOKED to ensure capacity and the RSVP lists will be honored on a first-come, first-serve basis, with no reserved seating. Please bring a photo ID or print out of your reservation confirmation, which will be automatically sent to your e-mail account upon successfully making an RSVP through the website. Check-in will begin approximately 30 minutes prior to start time.

ABOUT PARKING


The USC School of Cinematic Arts is located at 850 W. 34th St., Los Angeles, CA 90007. Parking passes may be purchased for $8.00 at USC Entrance Gate #5, located at the intersection of W. Jefferson Blvd. & McClintock Avenue. We recommend parking in outdoor Lot M or V, or Parking Structure D, at the far end of 34th Street. Please note that Parking Structure D cannot accommodate tall vehicles such as SUVs. Street parking is also available along W. Jefferson Boulevard.
