Researchers at SCA are actively investigating not only the future of digital cinema, but the development of new forms of screen-based entertainment such as games, immersive narrative, distributed mobile media and the technologies that underpin them. We are committed to the belief that the most powerful technologies do not emerge from a vacuum, but from deep collaboration among designers, technologists and artists who bring both real-world experience and theoretical vision to the table. The most engaging forms of entertainment likewise emerge when new technologies and new modes of storytelling evolve in parallel, mutually shaping and challenging the other. Our overarching objective is to develop entertainment technologies that are genuinely inspirational and enlightening, offering the ability to traverse new worlds that are both virtual and material; imaginary and real.

The USC School of Cinematic Arts (SCA) is the premiere destination for the study of the moving image and other experiential technologies. As the entertainment industry goes into the 21st Century, new forms of storytelling and creative expression, along with study of the history of visual expressions, are encouraged across all seven divisions. To support and encourage exploration of these new forms, SCA hosts several sponsored projects and research models. These combined efforts are defining a new form of research which is different from the Science and Humanities which continues to evolve with the input of top scholars and minds in the technology, education, health and entertainment industries.
