About The Voice of Hind Rajab

January 29, 2024. Palestinian Red Crescent Society volunteers are alerted to make an emergency call to 5-year-old Hind Rajab who is trapped in a car under Israeli tank fire in Gaza, pleading for rescue. While trying to keep her on the line, the volunteers do everything they can to get an ambulance to her, navigating the labyrinthine bureaucracy of COGAT, the Israeli defense ministry unit which manages civilian operations in the Occupied Territories.
Audio clips from Hind Rajab’s harrowing call were released to the world, even before her fate was known. They resonated globally as both tragedy and indictment. When Tunisian director Kaouther Ben Hania heard Hind’s voice, she began to see a way to preserve and honor Hind’s voice through the language of cinema. Ben Hania, nominated for the Academy Award for both The Man Who Sold His Skin and Four Daughters - one nomination for fiction and then for a documentary - has long navigated the porous boundary between documentary and fiction to craft films of beauty and power. With her hybrid film The Voice of Hind Rajab, she has created her most uncompromising and intimate film to date, linking the pure and devastating truth of Hind’s voice to a narrative work of cinema that unfolds through the eyes of those who tried to save her: the Red Crescent team on the other end of the call.

About the Guest
KAOUTHER BEN HANIA (Writer, Director)
Kaouther Ben Hania is a two-time Academy Award-nominated filmmaker whose bold, inventive, and deeply human storytelling has established her as a leading force in international cinema, continuing to push the boundaries of both nonfiction and narrative filmmaking.
Her most recent triumph, The Voice of Hind Rajab, won the Silver Lion at this year’s Venice International Film Festival and has continued to garner major acclaim, including a Golden Globe nomination for ‘Best Motion Picture – Non-English Language’ as well as Best of 2025 citations from The New York Times, The Hollywood Reporter, Rolling Stone, and The Associated Press. The film is Tunisia’s official submission for ‘Best International Feature’ at the 2026 Academy Awards.
The Voice of Hind Rajab, based on harrowing real events, recounts a series of emergency phone calls on January 29, 2024, in Gaza, when Palestine Red Crescent volunteers speak to a 5-year-old girl named Hind Rajab, trapped in a car under fire, pleading for rescue. While trying to keep her on the line, the volunteers do everything they can to get an ambulance to her before it is too late. This narrative film, which uses the actual audio recordings of Hind speaking with emergency personnel, portrayed here by Palestinian actors with the film set entirely inside a call center, is executive produced by Brad Pitt, Joaquin Phoenix, Rooney Mara, Jonathan Glazer, and Alfonso Cuarón.
Ben Hania's previous credits include the Academy Award-nominated and Independent Spirit and Gotham Award-winning documentary feature, Four Daughters, which premiered in competition at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, nominated for the Palme d’Or and awarded the festival’s Golden Eye prize. Using an audacious formal conceit whereby her missing daughters are portrayed by professional actors, the film tells the story of Olfa Hamrouni and her four daughters, examining why the Tunisian woman’s two eldest were radicalized in Libya, and the ripple effects it had on their family.
Her 2021 feature film, The Man Who Sold His Skin, about a Syrian refugee who turns his own body into a living work of art and is promptly exhibited in a museum, received an Academy Award nomination for ‘Best International Feature’ and won the Best Actor prize in the Horizons section of the 2020 Venice Film Festival.
Ben Hania's breakthrough film, Le Challat de Tunis, premiered at Cannes in 2014, and she returned to the festival in 2017 with her Un Certain Regard entry, Beauty and the Dogs. Her body of work also includes acclaimed documentaries and shorts such as Zaineb Hates the Snow and Wooden Hand.
