About the Class

Directing Actors for Film and Television is a hands-on Directing Boot Camp exploring the joys and challenges of collaborating with your actors to create meaningful, authentic characters.

Working with scenes from award-winning feature films, you will learn to shape and build a scene by analyzing the characters, themes, and emotions and breaking them down into parts.

With a particular emphasis on the director’s preparation, we will explore the language of directing and equip you with the tools necessary for articulating your vision for the film. We will use the process of rehearsing scenes as the foundation for developing your creative strategies for nurturing creative relationships with your actors and directing your films with confidence, originality, and passion.

Course Objectives

Students will develop the director’s ability to communicate effectively with actors with lessons that include:

  • How to analyze a scene and uncover its emotional truths.
  • Learn how to collaborate with actors creatively.
  • How to enable actors to deliver the emotional event of the scene through performance.

Students will also further their directing skills through in-class exercises and rehearsals culminating in a final directing project.

We hope that you will come to love working with actors and welcome them into your creative process to inspire and enlighten their best work.
