About the Class

In this course, students are introduced to the concepts of motion and timing that bring traditional 2D animation to life. Working digitally, students will explore a broad spectrum of innovative animated work, emphasizing commercials, art installations, and music videos.

During this 6-week course, students will complete a series of short assignments culminating in a short project of each student’s design and implementation. 

Course Objectives

The course will empower students with the mechanics, vocabulary, and tools of traditional 2D animation, the principles of which can be carried over to digital workflows, including:

  • Arcs
  • Timing
  • Spacing
  • Anticipation
  • Squash and Stretch
  • Overlapping action

By the end of the program, students will be able to effectively plan and execute short hand-drawn animations and analyze and articulate the mechanics of animated movement.

Familiarity with drawing is recommended but not required. Even stick figures can be expertly animated! Students will also have access to labs with Cintiq workstations outside of scheduled class time.
