About the Class

Beginning Screenwriting is an introductory course in writing for the screen. Students will develop their storyteller skills, drawing from experiences, observation, imagination, learning how to create compelling characters and stories.

Structured as a “writer’s room”, students will workshop their ideas, story, and characters with their instructor and peers in an environment that encourages honest and constructive criticism that will help students grow their unique writer’s voice.

Course Objectives

Through a series of lectures, discussion, and assignments, students will gain fundamental understanding of screenwriting, learning to conceptualize their story they write it. Goals include:

  • Introduction to the art and craft of screenwriting
  • Ability to conceive compelling ideas, characters, and stories
  • Write from visual and aural perspective
  • Proper script formatting
  • Learn to structure a story
  • Build the basics of a dramatic scene

By the end of the course, students will apply their skills to writing a short narrative 10-page maximum script.

  • This course is conducted entirely online via ZOOM.
  • All projects are created outside of scheduled class time.
