About the Class
In this introductory course, students will learn how use Maya 3D software for use in visual effects and computer animation. Students will cover subjects from modeling to animating to lighting and rendering. Historical and traditional film methodologies will be covered with a hand-on approach and how these methods are applied to producing VFX shots.
Students will learn how to create CGI models using Maya 3D software that will be integrated in live action footage, similar to what is seen in some of the industry’s biggest films and streaming series.
Course Objectives
The course is structured with a combination of lectures, screening, discussions, and in-class exercises. Lessons will includes:
- Basic CGI modeling, texturing and lighting
- Fundamentals in digital animation
- Compositing
- Rotoscoping
- Rendering final images
Students are not required to have knowledge of animation or prior experience with digital visual effects. On completion students will take away the skills to successfully integrate Visual Effects into their own short projects.

- All projects are created outside of scheduled class time.
