About the Class

This course is an intensive online filmmaking course in which students will learn what it takes to create powerful digital films with the help of classmates and excellent faculty. From the development of the student's scripts to the screening of their final projects, students will learn the essential tools and skills for telling compelling narratives, creating dynamic characters, and communication unique and personal visions. Every student will write, direct, photograph, and edit three digital projects that range from four to six minutes in length. Students are also highly encouraged to explore alternative and non-traditional forms in Fictional Drama, Documentary, as well as Experimental and New Media.

The basic principles of filmmaking will be introduced, including:

  • Writing 
  • Producing
  • Directing
  • Cinematography
  • Editing
  • Sound design

The format of the course will be a combination of lectures and screenings. You will learn a number of filmmaking tools, including:

  • How to tell great stories
  • Establish strong characters
  • Acquiring the ability to communicate with the cast and crew
  • Create a mise en scène
  • Discover the importance of post production
  • Use innovative sound design
  • Explore complex ideas through what the characters do rather than what they say
  • Analyze movies

Lecture workshops will also emphasize:

  • Story development
  • Articulation of goals
  • Aesthetics
  • Logistical pre-production
  • Mastery of all aspects of post-production
  • Developing analytical skills for creative collaboration

Lectures will be held through Zoom and will be focused on collaboration. Zoom is free for all enrolled USC students.

USC SCA will be providing licenses for the state of the art editing software, AVID Media Composer. 

Minimum equipment requirement: Smart phone with camera features.

Recommended equipment: DSLR with zoom lens.
