About the Class

Filmmaking Online is a six-week intensive online course in which every student will write, produce, direct, photograph, and edit three digital projects, 4 to 6 minutes in length. In this class, students will learn to express their ideas through the language of cinema.

This course will inspire students to explore themselves and their worlds through virtual collaboration. Students will be able to develop their unique visions as well as discover their individual voices while becoming more skilled, more confident, and more innovative filmmakers.

Course Objectives

With collaboration as the foundation of this course, students will workshop:

  • Develop essential skills for effective storytelling
  • Deliver and receive constructive feedback
  • Exploring all genres, including fiction, documentary, personal essay, poetry, etc.
  • Mastering the fundamentals of character development and story structure
  • Embracing the cultural and social impact of cinema
  • Pitching yourselves and your stories
  • Establishing ethical standards for filmmaking

Important Information

  • Lectures will be held through Zoom and will be focused on collaboration. Zoom is free for all enrolled students.
  • USC SCA will be providing licenses for the state of the art editing software, AVID Media Composer.
  • Minimum equipment: Smartphone with camera feature

  • This course is conducted entirely online via ZOOM.
  • All projects are created outside of scheduled class time.
  • All dates and times are subject to change.
  • Additional tutorials are taught outside scheduled class hours.
