“Filmed on Redstone 1” or “Filmed on Redstone 2” at the end of student film credits is soon going to be a common sight at film festivals around the country and the world. Legendary entertainment industry executive Sumner Redstone has named the Sumner M. Redstone Production Building housing two soundstages at the USC School Cinematic Arts (SCA). On February 5th the School hosted a gala reception in his honor attended by filmmakers George Lucas and Steven Spielberg, USC President C. L. Max Nikias, Chairman of the SCA Board of Councilors Frank Price, School of Cinematic Arts Dean Elizabeth M. Daley, and entertainment industry titans Brad Grey, Brian Grazer, Jim Wiatt, Les Moonves and Bob Evans.

“I’ve always said that content is king. It’s the lord of the realm. It’s the highest value in this industry,” Redstone told a crowd that gathered on Redstone Stage 2 for a dedication ceremony. “USC has been instrumental in celebrating the type of talent that exemplifies this and it’s my sincere honor to be associated with this great School and to help to shape the future of this industry. I’m hoping that adding my name to the Redstone building will further the art of storytelling and that, within its walls, the Spielbergs and Lucases of tomorrow will continue to make magic.”

The Sumner M. Redstone Production Building houses two production stages (Redstone Stage 1 and Redstone Stage 2) that are currently used each year by approximately 1,000 students from the School’s various divisions spanning film, television and new media production. The building features 2,600 square feet of production space where students collaborate while learning key production skills such as staging, lighting, directing, producing and forming and leading a crew.

“Sumner’s gift is wonderful and incredibly inspiring for the entire School of Cinematic Arts family and, in particular, our students,” said SCA Dean Daley. “The students that produce work on the Redstone stages will continue to honor Sumner’s generosity and follow his example as an incredible media icon.”

Redstone has become an active member of the SCA community of supporters in recent years, and delivered the School’s 2011 Commencement address, where he told students to remember their importance as content creators.

“This building is an important cornerstone of the USC School of Cinematic Arts,” USC President Nikias said at the ceremony. “It is a place where creative ideas will find fulfillment in the real world. With the dedication of this building, Sumner has left his mark on the University of Southern California and, for this, we are forever grateful.”

“George [Lucas] and I are very grateful to be here to dedicate the Sumner M. Redstone Production Building,” said Spielberg. “I’ve known Sumner for a long time and one of the most important things to understand about him is his commitment to Philanthropy. Sumner has exceeded everyone’s expectations when it comes to giving to the Trojan family.”

The Sumner M. Redstone Production Building is currently open and being used by students.
