Kathy Smith is a Professor and former Chair (2004 – 2009 and 2010 – 2014) of the John C Hench Division of Animation and Digital Arts. She teaches Expanded Animation, Master’s Thesis, Contemporary Topics in Animation & Digital Art and irregularly Animation Seminar and Visualizing Science.

Since 1984 her films have been screened internationally, including Anima Mundi, Hiroshima and Ottawa international animation festivals. She has exhibited at group and solo exhibitions such as the Institute of Contemporary Art in London, the Conservatorio di Santa Maria degli Angioli in Florence, Italy and at the Australian National Gallery, Canberra. Smith has independently created 15 short animated films including traditional and experimental mixed media animations, and since 1994, digital animated films, animated holographic installations and most recently IMAX and VR projects.

Smith’s work has been shown at SIGGRAPH, the Sundance Film Festival and was documented in Leonardo, the Journal of the International Society for the Arts, Sciences, and Technology, as part of the Ninth New York Digital Salon.

Smith’s animation and installation work are featured in “Animation Now” a world-wide publication by Taschen Press. In 2005 she was awarded the USC Phi Kappa Phi Honor Award in the Creative Arts for her work on Indefinable Moods and in the same year a Zumberge Research Grant for her project Slippages a digital animation and installation exploring three dimensional time and consciousness.

Smith initiated and was co-chair of REDEFINING ANIMATION the 25th Annual Conference of the Society for Animation Studies hosted at the School of Cinematic Arts, USC 2013.

Her teaching focuses on expanded animation practice and animation as consciousness.
