Division of Film & Television Production

Martin Jacob Lopez’ innovative work as a Sound Designer can be heard in more than 80 feature film, television, and streaming media productions. During his 30 years in the motion picture industry he has crafted sound for blockbuster and indie films alike, with five films in the Spider-Man franchise along with underground favorites like Mike Judge’s Idiocracy and Richard Linklater’s Fast Food Nation. He also pioneered a four-channel sound effects recording technique that he used for his work on Amblin’s Twister and the Sound Academy Award winning film Ghost and the Darkness. Not content with typical approaches to sound design,  Martin also built a massive bellows and 6 foot artificial larynx to create the creature breathing sounds for Godzilla, and created the voice of the character Crikee in the Disney animated feature Mulan using the Cuica, a traditional Brazilian musical instrument.

Martin earned his degree at the University of California at San Diego. He is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and the Motion Picture Sound Editors Association.
