About L.A. Rebellion: A Cinematic Movement

Following the Watts Uprising, UCLA’s School of Theater, Film and Television enacted affirmative action policies to increase enrollment of students of color in its film program — a group historically underrepresented in the student population. The “ethno-communications” initiative to recruit students from Black, Asian, Chicano and Native American communities became a movement known as "L.A. Rebellion.”

About Don't Be Long, Little Bird

Set in the Mediterranean-esque mountains of the coast of California, a young spirited girl named Rima escapes her reality and accidentally travels through time. She lands in the hands of her great-grandmother when she was her age: 1936 Palestine. Rima experiences the Palestine her ancestors dreamt of returning to…she desperately looks for a way home, aka the present, the place she originally desired to escape from.

About the Guest

REEM JUBRAN (Writer, Director, SCA Summer Program Faculty)

Reem Jubran is a filmmaker and visual artist based between Southern California and Palestine. Her photography and cinematic work explores memory, identity, and freedom. Her latest short narrative film, Don’t Be Long, Little Bird was awarded the Gotham Student Showcase Award and distributed online with Focus Features, the “Spirit of Palestine” award from the Chicago Palestine Film Festival, and received UCLA’s “Grand Jury Prize,” the highest distinction granted by the School of Theater, Film, and Television. She completed several experimental and documentary short films while achieving her B.A. in Film Studies from the University of California, Berkeley and continued her film education on the field in Palestine, where she worked as Assistant Director on Palestinian narrative feature films for two years. Today, she holds an MFA in Directing from University of California, Los Angeles. Don’t Be Long, Little Bird is her first international project and co-production between the USA and Palestine. Reem’s story as a UCLA filmmaker and the making-of is featured in the award-winning PBS documentary LA Rebellion: A Cinematic Movement, where she represents a continuation of the legacy and solidarity between black, brown, and indigenous filmmakers at UCLA.

About the SCA Summer Program

Check-In & Reservations

This program is open to all eligible individuals. The USC School of Cinematic Arts operates all of its programs and activities consistent with the University’s Notice of Non-Discrimination. Eligibility is not determined based on race, sex, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or any other prohibited factor.

This screening is free of charge and open to the public. A reservation confirmation will automatically be sent to your e-mail account upon successfully making an RSVP through this website. Doors will open at 6:30 P.M.

All SCA screenings are OVERBOOKED to ensure seating capacity in the theater, therefore seating is not guaranteed based on RSVPs. The RSVP list will be checked in on a first-come, first-served basis until the theater is full. Once the theater has reached capacity, we will no longer be able to admit guests, regardless of RSVP status.

Accessibility Needs
