About Too Much Sleep

Jack is stuck in neutral. He lives with his mom in suburban New Jersey, works as a security guard, and can barely get out of bed in the morning. All that changes when he sees a cute girl on the bus – and then realizes seconds later that his gun is missing. Desperate to find it, he enlists the help of a fast-talking middle-aged maybe-gangster named Eddie, who sends Jack on an epic quest to explore the darkest, strangest corners of American suburbia. Will Jack ever find his gun? Or better yet, maybe that cute girl from the bus?

Critically hailed as “a treasure” (Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times), “a gem” (Amy Taubin, Village Voice) and "wickedly smart” (Steve Rosen, Denver Post), Too Much Sleep was nearly lost forever when its original distributor closed weeks into its original theatrical run. Virtually unseen for 23 years, the film is now presented in a newly restored 4K scan from its original camera negative. It’s time to visit the sweet ennui of the 90’s!

About the Guests

DAVID MAQUILING (Writer, Director, Co-Producer)

David Maquiling is the Academic and Artistic Director of the USC School of Cinematic Arts Summer Program, where he oversees over 30 courses that explore the art, craft, and business of cinematic storytelling and creative collaboration.  In addition to his administrative role, David is the Co-Founder and Lead Faculty of the USC Warner Bros. Filmmaking Workshop; the Founder of the USC NBCUniversal Filmmaking Workshop; and the Lead Faculty for USC’s SCA NAI Berdakin Filmmaking Workshop, a program dedicated to providing filmmaking education to underrepresented high school students.

A magna cum laude graduate of New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, David made his feature film debut as the Writer/Director of Too Much Sleep, for which he received an Independent Spirit Award nomination and was featured in Variety’s “Someone to Watch” article.  A contemporary adaptation of a classic Filipino folk tale, the film premiered in competition at the South by Southwest Film Festival, screened at over 25 international festivals, and received critical acclaim upon its distribution by The Shooting Gallery. Too Much Sleep recently celebrated its 25th anniversary with a 4K restoration, now available on Special Edition Blu-Ray and streaming platforms.

David was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship to teach film production in the Philippines, he is the Co-Founder of the NewFilmmakers screening series at the Anthology Film Archives in New York, and he served as Festival Co-Director of the 25th Annual New York Asian International Film Festival.  He was honored to be the Head of the Feature Jury for the 22nd Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival and a juror member for the 2024 Manila International Film Festival.  He is a member of the Directors Guild of America, where he serves on the Asian American Committee, contributing to efforts aimed at increasing Asian American representation in the film and television industry.

MARC PALMIERI (Actor)

Marc Palmieri is an author, screenwriter, playwright, actor, and associate professor at Mercy University in New York, where he is a two-time recipient of the Outstanding Research Award (2023, 2025), and the Innovative Teaching Award (2022).  Screenplays include Telling You (Miramax, 1999), Sonnet 138 (short) (2013), The Thing (webseries) (2014). Marc’s plays include NY Times’ “Critic’s Pick” Levittown as well as The Groundling, Carl the Second, and Poor Fellas (all published by Dramatists Play Service, Inc.)

Marc's 2020 play Waiting for the Host was the first American professionally produced and published play written for both the stage and internet streaming, and premiered in its entirety at Red House Arts Center, directed by Tony Award nominee, Hunter Foster. The play is also published by DPS. Marc's adaptation of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night was produced in New York City in 2024 at the Drama Desk-nominated Axis Company, and subsequently published by Theatrical Rights Worldwide. Marc has published short stories in Fiction, The Global City Review and (Re) An Ideas Journal. His Amazon best-selling memoir, She Danced with Lightning, was published in 2022 by Post Hill Press.

At Mercy University's School of Liberal Arts, Marc teaches courses in cinema, Shakespeare, stage performance, communication studies, and playwriting. He also serves as the pitching coach for Mercy's Division II baseball team. Marc is also a longtime guest faculty member of The City College of New York’s MFA program in Creative Writing, teaching screenwriting, screen adaptation, and playwriting.

Marc is a fully-vested member of SAG-AFTRA, Actors Equity, has done many national commercials, and played the lead role in the critically-acclaimed, feature Too Much Sleep directed by David Maquiling. Marc graduated from Wake Forest University in 1994, where he played baseball, and was drafted as a pitcher by the Toronto Blue Jays. 

Marc was recently awarded a Citation of Honor by the Office of the Borough President of Queens, New York City, for his work and advocacy for epilepsy awareness.

Check-In & Reservations

This program is open to all eligible individuals. The USC School of Cinematic Arts operates all of its programs and activities consistent with the University’s Notice of Non-Discrimination. This screening is free of charge and open to the public. A reservation confirmation will automatically be sent to your e-mail account upon successfully making an RSVP through this website. Doors will open at 6:30 P.M.

All SCA screenings are OVERBOOKED to ensure seating capacity in the theater, therefore seating is not guaranteed based on RSVPs. The RSVP list will be checked in on a first-come, first-served basis until the theater is full. Once the theater has reached capacity, we will no longer be able to admit guests, regardless of RSVP status.
