About the Guests

JOHN W. KIM (Writer, Director, Producer, SCA Alumnus)

John W. Kim is a first generation Korean American storyteller. Born in Seoul, Korea, he immigrated to the United States at the age of four, grew up in the Silicon Valley and began writing plays and fiction in his teens. Educated at the University of California at Santa Cruz, where he graduated cum laude in Literature and Creative Writing, he was a founding member of the Shakespeare Santa Cruz Festival under the direction of Audrey Stanley, where he worked with Royal Shakespeare members Tony Church and Julian Curry, and produced a collection of short fiction, “Earth Fires,” as part of his thesis work. While attending the University of Southern California’s graduate Cinema-Television program (now Cinematic Arts), John produced and directed a number of short films from his own screenplays, studying with Academy Award-winning screenwriter and filmmaker Frank Pierson (“Dog Day Afternoon”) and writer/director Ivan Passer (“Cutter and Bone”).

Post graduate studies at USC, John taught film and screenwriting for over twenty years, as well as working a fifteen year career in journalism for publications such as the San Jose Mercury, the Times-Tribune Syndicate, and Script Magazine, where he was staff writer and West Coast editor. His work has been reprinted in over 35 periodicals nationally. His screenplays have received widespread recognition, including semifinal and quarter-finalist placement in the Nicholl Fellowship with the screenplay Blur, along with multiple second round placements in the Sundance Screenwriter’s lab. In 2022, the screenplay for Reunion was Silver Medalist in Page International’s Comedy Feature category from over 2500 submissions.

DAGMAWI ABEBE (Editor, SCA Alumnus)

Dagmawi Abebe (Dag) is an award-winning Ethiopian-born American Writer, Director, and Editor. He pursued a major in Physics and a minor in Film Studies at the University of Virginia, honing his unique blend of analytical thinking and creative vision before getting his Master of Fine Arts in Film and TV Production from the University of Southern California. He has received numerous accolades for his work, including the Directors Guild of America Student Jury Prize and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Grant. On top of theatrical and streaming platforms such as Hulu, Dag's films have also been celebrated at prestigious film festivals worldwide, including the Tribeca Film Festival, Warsaw International Film Festival, and International Rome Film Fest. With a genuine passion for storytelling, Dag pushes the boundaries of artistic expression, crafting immersive narratives that resonate with audiences worldwide. He's currently based in Los Angeles.

Outside the Box [Office] is a weekly showcase for upcoming releases highlighting world cinema, documentary and independent film titles. The series draws from around the globe to present movies that may challenge, inspire or simply entertain.

Check-In & Reservations

This program is open to all eligible individuals. The USC School of Cinematic Arts operates all of its programs and activities consistent with the University’s Notice of Non-Discrimination. Eligibility is not determined based on race, sex, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or any other prohibited factor.

This screening is free of charge and open to the public. A reservation confirmation will automatically be sent to your e-mail account upon successfully making an RSVP through this website. Doors will open at 6:30 P.M.

All SCA screenings are OVERBOOKED to ensure seating capacity in the theater, therefore seating is not guaranteed based on RSVPs. The RSVP list will be checked in on a first-come, first-served basis until the theater is full. Once the theater has reached capacity, we will no longer be able to admit guests, regardless of RSVP status.
