About Dogra Magra (1988)

From Japanese cult visionary Toshio Matsumoto (FUNERAL PARADE OF ROSES) comes another masterful cinematic exploration of memory and identity from one of the country’s greatest experimental minds. An amnesic young man awakens in an asylum to learn that he has been charged for killing his bride on their wedding day. Driven to learn more about his condition, his doctors proceed with a series of experimental treatments to tap into his familial history and, thus, find the source of his violent impulses. As the lines between fantasy and history begin to blur, the man must grapple with the truths of both his past and present to free himself from the burdens of his illness. With its kaleidoscopic style and enigmatic tone, DOGRA MAGRA is Matsumoto in top form: mystifying, intelligent, electrifying.

Directed by Toshio Matsumoto. Written by Toshio Matsumoto and Atsushi Yamatoya. Produced by Shuji Shibata and Kazuo Shimizu. Running time: 109 min.
