About Kinji Fukasaku's Graveyard of Honor (1975)
“A celluloid kick to the solar plexus . . . compared to Ishikawa, Joe Pesci in GOODFELLAS looks like he was on Valium.” -- Steven Pulchaski, SHOCK CINEMA
Equivalent in stature to Spielberg amongst the Japanese film scene, Kinji Fukasaku’s mob films differed from all the rest thanks to their layers of complexity and delirious violence representing the chaos of post-WWII Japan. Fukasaku brings three decades of seared mass psychology to GRAVEYARD OF HONOR’s centerpiece: real-life hood Rikio Ishikawa (Tetsuya Watari, OUTLAW GANGSTER VIP). The outbursts of this IRL “natural born killer” are so rapturously filmed that you feel each of his gut-wrenching further steps into madness!
Direced by Kinji Fukasaku. Screenplay by Tatsuhiko Kamoi, Hirô Matsuda, and Fumio Kônami. Produced by Toru Yoshida. Provided courtesy of Arrow Films. Running time: 94 minutes.

About Takashi Miike's Graveyard of Honor (2002)
In the same loose remake spirit as Herzog’s BAD LIEUTENANT: PORT OF CALL NEW ORLEANS, Takashi Miike -- the blazing-hot cinematic gun behind some of Japan’s most notorious cult films like AUDITION, ICHI THE KILLER and HAPPINESS OF THE KATAKURIS -- remakes Kinji Fukasaku’s Seventies psycho crime thriller. Miike’s film is both a radical reimagining of Fukasaku’s original premise, and captures the hedonism / nihilism of Japan’s modern crime scene in deliriously stylish fashion. Goro Kishitani stars as the self-destructive hood who makes his way up from dishwasher to yakuza kingpin in swift fashion!
Directed by Takashi Miike. Screenplay by Shigenori Takechi. Produced by Shigeji Maeda and Kazuyuki Yokoyama. Provided courtesy of Arrow Films. Running time: 131 minutes.
