About the Short Films

QUOTA (3 minutes)

Written & Directed by Job Roggeveen, Joris Oprins, and Marieke Blaauw.
World Premiere: Toronto Film Festival

A wickedly funny parable that suggests a rather extreme means of getting people to think about their footprint on this world from the Dutch animation studio Job, Joris & Marieke, creators of the Oscar-nominated short ‘A Single Life’.

TO MYSELF, WITH LOVE: THE BESSIE STRINGFIELD STORY (24 minutes)

Written & Directed by Diane Fredel-Weis.
World Premiere: AmDocs

This is the first film about Black motorcycle trailblazer, Bessie Stringfield. Stringfield was the first Black woman to ride a motorcycle across the United States—a feat she accomplished in 1930 at the age of 19 during the Jim Crow era. The short documentary includes never before seen or heard materials about Stringfield. Interviews with people that knew Bessie shed light on her extraordinary life. The 300 women of the Bessie Stringfield All-Female Ride show Stringfield's impact today 30 years after her passing.

THE WILD-TEMPERED CLAVIER (7 minutes)

Art, Direction, and Animation by Anna Samo.
European Premiere: Festival d’Annecy

An artist insists on playing despite the world's disasters: A story inspired by Bach's immortal music and painted onto toilet paper rolls as a tribute to the tradition of painting directly on 35mm film.

OBRAZA (Resentment, 30 minutes)

Directed by Gleb Osatinski. Written by Gleb Osatinski and Elice Segal.
World Premire: Berlinale Generations

Yasha is rebelling against authority, but in 1990’s Soviet Ukraine some of the opposing forces are more dangerous than others. When Yasha hits his breaking point, raw impulses propel him to the precipice of irreparable harm.

MAYBE ELEPHANTS (16 minutes)

Written and Directed by Torill Kove.
World Premiere: Festival d’Annecy

In the ’70s, three rebellious teenage daughters, a restless mother, a father struggling with potatoes, and maybe some elephants, find themselves in bustling Nairobi. The family will never be the same. Created by Oscar®-winning animator Torill Kove (The Danish Poet), Maybe Elephants is a playful and loving autobiographical homage to family, adolescence and the therapeutic power of memories, however unreliable.

MAKAYLA'S VOICE: A LETTER TO THE WORLD (23 minutes)

Directed by Julio Palacio.
World Premiere: Slamdance Film Festival

Makayla, a teenage girl, who has spent her life grappling with a rare form of autism that rendered her essentially nonverbal until her parents, filled with unwavering belief in their daughter's potential, embarked on a transformative journey to discover the true depth of Makayla's inner world.
