Please join us for a screening of the first feature length documentary on the group Survival Research Laboratories, covering a December 2012 SRL performance at the Extreme Futurist Festival in Los Angeles.
About the screening
Survival Research Laboratories was conceived and founded by Mark Pauline in November 1978. Since the inception SRL has operated as an organization of creative technicians dedicated to re-directing the techniques tools, and tenets of industry, science, and the military away from their typical manifestations in practicality, product or warfare. Since 1979, SRL has staged over 45 mechanized presentations in the United States, Europe and Japan. Each performance consists of a unique set of ritualized interactions between machines, robots, and special effect devices, employed in developing themes of socio-political satire. Humans are present only as audience and operators.
This November SRL will celebrate its 40th anniversary. Beginning in 1985, SRL has had a long history of performing in Los Angeles, including shows at LACE, POST, Dangerous Curve, Fringe Exhibitions, MOCA, and the Xtreme Futurist Festival. This will be the public premier in Los Angeles of Steve Bage’s documentary film “Survival Research Laboratories Live at the Extreme Futurist Festival, Los Angeles, California, December 22, 2012”. The film was shot and edited with 19 cameras, and has been four years in the making. It captures the essence of the crew and the entire production process, all the way from conception to the final performance.
