About Return to Oz (1985)

Dorothy discovers she is back in the land of Oz, and finds the yellow brick road is now a pile of rubble, and the Emerald City is in ruins. Discovering that the magical land is now under the control of an evil empire, she sets off to rescue the scarecrow, the tin man and the lion with the help of her new friends.

About the Guests

WALTER MURCH (Writer/Director/SCA Alumnus)

Walter Murch is a film editor, sound designer, director, translator and amateur astronomer. His forty-five years of pioneering sound design and picture editing work on films include THX-1138, The Conversation, The Godfather (I, II, III), Julia, Apocalypse Now, The English Patient, Cold Mountain, and Jarhead, as well as writing and directing Return to Oz. He is author of In the Blink of an Eye, a book about the craft of film editing, and is the subject of The Conversations by Michael Ondaatje, as well as Behind the Seen by Charles Koppelman. His latest film work (2014) is Particle Fever, a feature documentary on the Large Hadron Collider and the search for the Higgs boson, directed by Mark Levinson. Brad Bird’s Tomorrowland, which Murch edited, will be released in May of 2015.

PAUL MASLANKSY (Producer)

Paul entered showbiz as a trumpet player with a number of bands in his native Manhattan. After a sojourn in radio advertising sales, Maslansky moved to Europe where he served as an assistant director and later production manager on European films, including Carol Reed's "The Running Man" (1963). From 1965 to 1967 he was the head of physical production for United Artists. He subsequently produced the first Italo-Soviet co-production, Mikhail Kalatozov's "The Red Tent" (1971), and the first joint US-USSR film venture, George Cukor's "The Blue Bird" (1976). Having produced 35 films, audiences are probably most aware of his extremely successful "Police Academy" franchise which has spawned six sequels and two TV versions. Returning to Moscow, Maslansky co-produced a Fred Schepisi's adaptation of John le Carre's "The Russia House" (1990), which teamed Sean Connery and Michelle Pfeiffer. Maslansky also has made occasional forays into American TV. In addition to an animated and live-action version of "Police Academy: The Series" (syndicated, 1989 and 1997 respectively), he produced the Emmy-nominated biographical miniseries "King" (NBC, 1978), featuring Paul Winfield and Cicely Tyson.

About Movies We Love -- A message from Timothy Dowling, USC Alum, Screenwriter, and SCA Representative on the USC Board of Governors

One of the my favorite things about going to USC was in film classes occasionally you’d see a movie that you’d never seen before or one you’d never seen on the big screen and then it would become one of your favorite movies for the rest of your life.

One of my favorite things about living in Los Angeles is that occasionally we get to see great movies up on the big screen and occasionally have those that made the films come and speak. This is something really unique to our city and doesn’t really happen anywhere else in the world.

So when the Cinema School asked me to represent them on the Alumni Board of Governors, the first thing I wanted to do was start a program at the school where we show great movies that we love and get people that worked on them to come to campus and speak about them.

It’s called MOVIES WE LOVE. And the hope is to just show you movies that we love that maybe you love also or have never seen or never seen on the big screen.

Check-In & Reservations

This screening is free of charge and open to the public. Please bring a valid USC ID or print out of your reservation confirmation, which will automatically be sent to your e-mail account upon successfully making an RSVP through this website. Doors will open at 6:30 P.M.

All SCA screenings are OVERBOOKED to ensure seating capacity in the theater, therefore seating is not guaranteed based on RSVPs. The RSVP list will be checked in on a first-come, first-served basis until the theater is full. Once the theater has reached capacity, we will no longer be able to admit guests, regardless of RSVP status.

Parking

The USC School of Cinematic Arts is located at 900 W. 34th St., Los Angeles, CA 90007. Parking passes may be purchased for $10.00 at USC Entrance Gate #4, located at the intersection of W. Jefferson Blvd. & Royal Street. We recommend Parking Structure D, at the far end of 34th Street. Metered street parking is also available along Jefferson Blvd.
