Alexis Pauline Gumbs is a queer black troublemaker, a black feminist love evangelist and a prayer poet priestess with a PhD in English, African and African American studies and women's and gender studies from Duke University. From educational videos about black feminist history to a video curriculum for trauma survivors, Gumbs uses video to educate, empower, build community and transform society. Based on Alexis Pauline's multimedia project In Your Hands, this hands-on workshop is an opportunity to get in touch with legacy and to create multi-directional portals of wisdom across distance, time and death. Participants need only bring the materials they would normally walk around the world with to engage concepts of ancestral listening, sacred space creation and embodied legacy.

Gumbs is currently on tour with her interactive oracle project The Lorde Concordance, a series of rituals mobilizing the life and work of Audre Lorde as a dynamic sacred text. Her scholarly work is published in Obsidian, Symbiosis, MaComère, The Routledge Companion to Anglophone Caribbean Literature, Signs, Feminist Collections, The Black Imagination, Mothering and Hip Hop Culture and The Business of Black Power. She is the author of an acclaimed collection of poems, 101 Things That Are Not True About the Most Famous Black Women Alive, and her poetic work has been published in Kweli, Vinyl, Backbone, Everyday Genius, Turning Wheel, UNFOLD and make/shift.
