The SCA Summer Screening Series is a showcase for upcoming releases highlighting world cinema, documentary and independent film titles, as well as current Hollywood blockbusters, reflecting the full spectrum of diverse, challenging and entertaining filmmaking being produced in the world today. The screenings will take place in the School of Cinematic Arts Complex theaters, as well as in Norris Cinema Theatre, whenever specified.

05/17 -- Countdown to Zero (U.S.A.)
7:00 P.M. in SCA 112
Countdown to Zero traces the history of the atomic bomb from its origins to the present state of global affairs: nine nations possessing nuclear weapons, with the world held in a delicate balance that could be shattered by an act of terrorism, failed diplomacy, or a simple accident.

 

Eric the postman is slipping through his own fingers… His wife has gone, his stepsons are out of control and the house was chaotic even before a cement mixer appeared in the front garden. Life is crazy enough, but it is Eric's own secret that is driving him to the brink.

 

05/19 -- The Oath (U.S.A.)

The Oath is a spectacularly gripping documentary that unspools like a great political thriller. It's the cross-cut tale of two men whose fateful meeting propelled them on divergent courses with Al-Qaeda, Osama bin Laden, 9/11, Guantanamo Bay Prison and the U.S. Supreme Court.

05/20 -- Micmacs (France)
7:00 P.M. in Norris Cinema Theatre
First it was a mine that exploded in the middle of the Moroccan desert. Years later, it was a stray bullet that lodged in his brain... Bazil doesn't have much luck with weapons. The first made him an orphan, the second holds him on the brink of sudden, instant death.

05/24 -- Living in Emergency (U.S.A.)

Set in war-torn Congo and post-conflict Liberia, Living in Emergency interweaves the stories of four volunteers with Doctors Without Borders as they struggle to provide emergency medical care under the most extreme conditions.

They are the eyes and ears of Hollywood. Every script, every contract passes through their hands. They know every actor's price. They know every agent's weak spot. If they ever pooled their resources, there's nothing they couldn’t do.

05/27 -- Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (U.S.A.)
7:00 P.M. in Norris Cinema Theatre
A rogue prince named Dastan reluctantly joins forces with a mysterious princess Tamina and together, they race against dark forces to safeguard an ancient dagger capable of releasing the Sands of Time—a gift from the gods that can reverse time and allow its possessor to rule the world.

So it's the end of the school year, and smarmy Principal Gordon has suddenly instituted a zero-tolerance crusade against his nemesis, the reviled marijuana. A mandatory drug test for all students is to be administered, failure of which will result in immediate expulsion.

At the Theatre Des Champs-Elysées, Igor Stravinsky premieres his The Rite Of Spring. Coco Chanel attends the premiere and is mesmerized... Seven years later, now successful, Coco Chanel meets Stravinsky again - a penniless refugee living in exile in Paris after the Russian Revolution.

06/04 -- Gangster's Paradise: Jerusalema (South Africa)

Inspired by a true story, Gangster's Paradise: Jerusalema is an unflinching look into the crime, corruption and the transgressions of those looking to survive in the most crime-infested district of Johannesburg.

Thirteen stories told with humor and empathy fill Roland Tec's tapestry of post-9/11 America, offering an intimate portrait of those who either stood bravely against the tide of fear or found themselves helplessly swept up in it.

Bertolucci. Varda. Frears. Haynes. Lynch. Breillat. Linklater. Loach. Sayles. Cavani. Filmmaker Angela Ismailos set out on a journey to look at some of the greatest living auteurs of our time.

The 2010 Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Prize Winner for Documentary, the film chronicles the deployment of a platoon of U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan's Korengal Valley, located at a remote 15-man outpost, "Restrepo," named after a platoon medic killed in action.

The highly anticipated sequel to one of the scariest films of all time, [Rec] 2 picks up 15 minutes from where we left off, taking us back into the quarantined apartment building where a terrifying virus has run rampant, turning the occupants into mindlessly violent, raging beasts.

A feature-length documentary detailing the shocking lack of oversight, planning, and leadership within the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), and how its corrupt management continues to knowingly expose the U.S. to terrorist attacks.

A motley crew of former Bolshoi musicians now scraping a living in Moscow as cab drivers, removal men, flea market traders, etc. attempt to perform a concert in Paris by impersonating the current Bolshoi orchestra.


07/14 -- Verso (Switzerland/Luxembourg/Belgium)

A new Swiss thriller following the interconnected stories of three destinies: Alex, a policeman; Victor, a former policeman and convict; and Lou, an adolescent. Followed by a Q&A with the director and one of the lead actors.

From director Lance Daly comes the story of two young runaways living on the fringes of Dublin who discover both beauty and danger in the big city. Together, they test the limits of what life can become and in the process learn what they can do for each other.

08/02 -- A Film Unfinished (Germany/Israel)

At the end of WWII, 60 minutes of raw film was discovered, labeled simply "Ghetto", that quickly became considered an authentic record of the Warsaw Ghetto. The recent discovery of a long-missing reel, inclusive of cameramen staging scenes, complicates the authenticity of the footage.

08/15 -- Curb Creatures (U.S.A.)

A documentary exploring the lives of seven homeless people living on the streets of Hollywood, struggling to survive addictions, mental illness and isolation. Seeking celebrity and fame, the group finds instead the harsh reality of a non-caring and uncompassionate society.

08/16 -- The People I've Slept With (U.S.A.)
7:00 P.M. in SCA 112
A sex comedy about a promiscuous woman who finds herself with an unplanned pregnancy and needs to figure out who the baby daddy is…NOW.

A slasher musical about a rock band that goes on a camping trip to write a new album and ends up getting hunted by their worst nightmare. It features original music by singer/songwriter Sam Bisbee, and a cast of young, talented musicians making their acting debuts.

08/18 -- OSS 117: Lost in Rio (France)
7:00 P.M. in SCA 108
The pride of French intelligence, Hubert Bonisseur de la Bath – code named OSS 117 – has a new mission that takes him to the Bossa Nova Brazil of the 1960's. Teaming up with a sexy Mossad agent he has to capture a Nazi blackmailer with a long list of WWII French collaborators.
