Don Edler is an artist, filmmaker and educator whose work focuses on critical perspectives around art and technology. Edler’s work explores the deep history of human technical development and how our technology has influenced our social and cultural evolution. His experimental documentary Devil You Know, 2020, utilized novel machine learning-based technologies such as Open AI’s GPT-3 language model and Amazon’s Polly synthetic voice generator to investigate how mass media, popular culture and emerging forms of “artificial intelligence” can quickly become dangerously entangled. Edler has exhibited his work widely and is a past recipient of the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Graduate Art Award Fellowship and the Marty Sklar Entertainment Innovation Fellowship. Edler lives and works in Los Angeles.
