dLux California Dreaming program @ 2000 Sydney Film Festival

dLux media arts is also presenting California Dreaming at the Sydney Film Festival - a unique program of historical and contemporary animation from the Division of Animation and Digital Arts (DADA) in the School of Cinema-Television at the University of Southern California.

Ranging from early works by USC alumni George Luces, John Milius and John Knoll (creator of PhotoShop) to the visual and technological experiments of today, all works are screening in Australia for the first time.

Digital artist Vibeke Sorenson and artist-animator-activist Mar Elepa-o from DADA at USC will introduce and contextualise the program at the intersection of Los Angeles' entertainment, mutlimedia, fine arts and cross-cultural communities.

dLux has invited Vibeke Sorensen and Mar Elepano to the Sydney Film Festival to introduce and contextualise the works in California Dreaming.

Vibeke Sorensen
is Chair of the Division of Animation and Digital Arts at USC and Director of its MFA in film, video and computer animation. An innovative artist in her own right, Vibeke's video, film, computer graphics and animation work has received many honours and has been shown internationally on television and the internet, in galleries and museums as well being performed live. She is an innovative thinker and lively speaker who believes artists have an important role to play in the development of technology (see her website on http://felix.usc.edu/vibke.html).

Mar Elepano is an artist-animator-activist who has been teaching in the Division of Animation & Digital Arts since 1993. He also serves as the Production Supervisor of the division. He has been involved with Visual Communications Inc, a Los Angeles based Asian American community media arts group, since 1986 doing media workshops. From 1988-94 he was artist-in-residence at different Los Angeles high schools creating media with young people. He did similar workshops at the California Institution for Men in Chino from 1992-94. He is currently involved with the Magnolia elementary school conducting an animation workshop for grade 2-5 students since 1996.
