What interests you the most about your specific division or program at SCA?
The Production Division of SCA gives me the ability to try all disciplines of the filmmaking process. While directing is my focus, I have been able to also gain knowledge in other areas, particularly cinematography, writing and producing. Studying all disciplines gives you a deeper understanding and appreciation for the work happening around you on a fast-moving set. This has made me a more well-rounded filmmaker from when I came into the program.
Why did you choose SCA?
SCA was my only consideration for graduate school. I knew I wanted to attend a program in the heart of the city where the industry is based. The access to resources and opportunities within Los Angeles was an essential factor for me. Additionally, SCA’s commitment to collaboration. Filmmaking is a purely collaborative process. From the first day, SCA truly encouraged and gave us the tools to find our long-term collaborators.
What has been your biggest challenge so far in your time here?
The biggest challenge I have faced during my time at SCA has been balancing time. There are so many opportunities presented to you; the ability to create your own projects, crew on other students' projects, attend exclusive screenings and Q&A sessions, internship opportunities, etc. It can be a lot to take in and decipher when to take a break, and when to dive into a new opportunity.
What advice do you have for prospective students looking to apply to SCA?
Consider your goals for yourself and your filmmaking journey. Any graduate-level program is going to be challenging, and SCA is no exception. During the difficult times, you have to remember it is an investment in yourself, and your dreams. Don’t forget why you want to tell stories and what drives your desire to share them with others. Believe that you deserve to be here, because you do!
