About the Class

"It's none of their business that you have to learn to write. Let them think you were born that way"
---Ernest Hemingway

No one remembers the fact that every great writer must have taken lessons in the fundamentals of writing. All people remember is the end result. However, it is those basic fundamentals that resulted in great writers.

In this intensive indtroductory course, students will learn the basics of screenwriting. This class format is a combination of:

  • Lectures
  • Screenings
  • Discussions
  • In-class exercises
Students will learn many lessons in writing including (but not exclusive to):

  • Acquiring a personal, professional style of writing in the screenplay format
  • Developing an understanding of character and conflict
  • Learning to write from a cinematic perspective
  • Understanding the importance of rewriting
Additionally, remembering that all writers have a goal of improving, constructive criticism is a huge part of the process. Students will receive such criticism from both their fellow classmates and instructor.
