About the Class

This course is an introduction to using Maya 3D software for use in visual effects and computer animation. It is an overview of how to use 3D software in visual effect production, from modeling to animating to lighting and rendering. Students will finish this class knowing how you can proceed into a career in computer animation or visual effects.

The core of this course is becoming proficient in Maya so that students can continue to grow as a CGI artist, perhaps eventually into a professional if you are willing to put in the years of study and hard work.

The format of the class is a combination of:

  • Lectures
  • Screenings
  • Discussions
  • In-class exercises
The lessons learned in this class include (but not exclusive to):

  • Modeling concepts
  • Polygonal modeling
  • NURBS
  • Particles and effects objects
  • Lighting concepts
  • Simple and complex animation through Maya
While this is a serious learning program, students will also have a little fun in class. Students will watch clips from fan favorite animated and live action films (from Snow White to Up) that demonstrate the particular topic that is being taught that day.

*All projects are created outside of scheduled class time.*
