USC’s School of Cinematic Arts Writing for Screen & Television Division is the most respected program of its kind in the country. Out of thousands of applicants each year, only 26 undergraduate students and 32 graduate students are admitted for their respective degrees. Our writers come from all over the world, and many are already accomplished playwrights and prose writers before they begin their training in screenwriting.
Our philosophy in storytelling is a combination of compelling characters and three-act structure. Additionally, we encourage experimental narratives, and television pilot writing and preparation for growing media like mobisodes, Internet series, and gaming. Most of our students graduate with extensive writing samples.
A short sample of our numerous successful alumni include: Andrew Marlowe (
Air Force One ), John Singleton (
Boyz N’ The Hood ), Shonda Rhymes (creator,
Grey’s Anatomy ), Josh Schwartz (creator,
Chuck,
The OC ), Jamie Vanderbuilt (
Basic ), David Veloz (
Natural Born Killers ), Matthew Ryan Hodge (
United States of Leland ), Matthew Weiner (
Sopranos ), Jeff Davis (creator,
Quantico ), Brian Peterson and Kelly Saunders (
Smallville ), Steven Chbosky (
Jericho, Rent ), Lisa Parsons (
Arrested Development ), Brad Riddell (
American Pie: Band Camp ), Aaron Thomas (
