Denise McKenna

Part-Time Lecturer

Denise McKenna received her Ph.D. in Cinema Studies from New York University (2008), and a M.A. in Art History from SUNY Stony Brook.  Her dissertation Making the Pictures Move: Gender, Labor and the Film Industry in Los Angeles, 1908-1917 is a history of the film industry’s social and economic integration with Los Angeles during the teens.  She recently published an article on extras and the gendered politics of labor in the early American film industry, and has taught courses on Gender and Media, Silent Film, American Film History, and 19th Century Media and Representation.
