Patricia G. Lange is a Postdoctoral Fellow studying the semiotics of video production, sharing, and reception on YouTube and in the video blogging community. Her research combines theories and methods from cultural and linguistic anthropology to understand online interaction. The work is part of a large-scale, MacArthur-funded project on digital youth and informal learning. Her research interests include technical identity performance, online communication, social network creation through video sharing, and bodily experience of place. Of particular interest is understanding how children and youth learn to participate in online communities and how they accomplish social activism through video blogging.

Prior to joining USC, Lange worked for seven years at SRI International, analyzing market and technical trends in advanced computer interfaces such as virtual environments and portable computers. In addition, she has taught courses in ethnographic film, organizational cultures, emerging global cultures, and social problems in the United States at San José State and the
University of Santa Clara. Recognized as an expert in researching video sharing practices, she was also an invited curator for Pixelodeon, the first independent video blogging festival which was held at the American Film Institute in June 2007.
