USC Media Arts + Practice invites you to join us on the evening of March 8th for the artist presentations of PRAXIS XII: Augmented Apparatus.
PRAXIS is a series of exhibitions and monthly conversations with media artists, curated by PhD students in the Division of Media Arts + Practice. The program brings together members of LA's experimental design community to engage in a discourse about future cinema and design practice at the edges of the field.
Curime Batliner (b. 1983, Costa Rica) works at the convergence of architecture, 3D animation, film, interface design and robotics. His work stands out at the top level of the emerging discipline of creative robotics and embodies the shifting relationships between the human and the artificial. Many of the ideas in his artistic practice, revolve around contemporary platforms and public spaces that constitute itself through layering of physical infrastructure with digital protocols and public performances. Batliner is faculty at the Southern California Institute of Architecture, SCI-Arc where he teaches classes in the graduate and postgraduate program and is responsible for the coordination of the robotics lab. Balancing his curiosity he bounces between teaching, applied research, commercial collaborations and his artistic practice. His work has been exhibited at Design Miami, Mextropoli, Museo Nacional de Arte Mexico and he has worked with names such as Creative Artists Agency, Oblong Industries and TBWA. He has worked on Greg Lynn's RV Prototype as well on the world's first Active Energy Building by Falkeis2Architects. His design research is published at the ICRA IEEE International Conference for Robotics and Automation as well as Robots in Architecture.
Sarah Belle Reid is a Canadian performer-composer, active in the fields of electroacoustic trumpet performance, intermedia arts, music technology, and improvisation. As a composer, Reid’s work focuses on liminality and memory imprints both in sound and physical performance—a fascination inspired by Marcel Duchamp’s writings on infrathin. She has also been working on the design and development of new interfaces for musical expression, as a means of augmenting the trumpet. Reid is a co-developer of the Minimally Invasive Gesture Sensing Interface (MIGSI) for trumpet: an open-source, wireless interface that captures performance data and provides real-time extended sonic and visual control. As a scholar, Reid has studied with music technology leaders Dr. Ajay Kapur and Dr. Perry Cook, and published technical and theoretical papers on the subjects of interdisciplinary process and collaboration, musical interface design, and alternate methods of musical notation. Reid has been an invited speaker and guest artist at Hendrix University, University of Oregon, UC Irvine’s Women in Music Technology symposium, the European Society for the Cognitive Sciences of Music, and the international conference of New Interfaces for Musical Expression (NIME).
