Doe Mayer is Professor and Mary Pickford Chair of Film & Television Production at USC’s School of Cinematic Arts. She holds a joint appointment with the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism.
Mayer has been working in film and television for the past 30 years and has produced, directed and provided technical support for hundreds of productions in the United States and more than twenty developing countries in Africa, Asia, the Pacific Islands and the Americas. Much of this programming has been in the areas of family planning, basic education, health and nutrition promotion, HIV/AIDS prevention, population and women’s issues.
Mayer is currently Principle Investigator and producer on two film production grants. One, from the National Institutes of Health, will test narrative versus fact-based film material for cancer communication; the second, from the National Science Foundation, is designed to encourage minorities and girls to study science in elementary school.
Mayer has won numerous awards including Fulbright fellowships to Fiji, the Netherlands and Australia, a Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation grant, USC’s Remarkable Women Award, and the Associate’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, which is USC’s top university teaching honor (2009-2010). She is co-author of the book Creative Filmmaking from the Inside Out as well as many scholarly articles.
