Welcome Back! SCA Council on Diversity and Inclusion Updates
Bias Reporting Protocol, First Generation Media Professionals Initiative, etc.
Dear SCA Community,
Last year, the SCA Council on Diversity and Inclusion made headway on many of our goals and I wanted to take the opportunity to update you all and thank all of our Council members for their efforts and support last year.
This semester we launched our pilot Diversity and Inclusion module in which all of our incoming graduate students are enrolled. The class welcomed Robert Townsend, Anthony Sparks and Sheldon Candis as guest panelists for our first session. The class will meet once a month for the rest of the Fall and we have invited a series of exciting panelists for the upcoming classes. The Council thanks CAMS Ph.D. student and Graduate Student Diversity and Inclusion Council Representative Philana Payton for all of her hard work in advocating for the class.
Due to the efforts of one of our wonderful sub committees, we began a successful speaker series entitled “Our Voices” and hosted then, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ President Cheryl Boone Isaacs, filmmaker Andrew Ahn, who screened Spa Night and director John Singleton. (Thank you Claudia Walters, Stacey Patterson, John Palmer, Sam Shaib, OShea Miles and Alicia Cornish White for all your hard work in coordinating these events). We look forward to another active “Our Voices” series this year and invite anyone who is interested in joining the sub committee to contact us at email@example.com. Our Voices will be hosting Gina Prince-Blythwood on October 10th in SCA 112 so look out for the invite and RSVP early.
With the help of Alex Ago, we were also able to cohost a series of screenings on campus and will be working with Outside of the Box again this year. Our first co-sponsored screening this year is the Netflix Original Documentary Strong Island on September 19th in SCA 112 at 7 p.m. You can make reservations here. Make Reservations »
We are happy to announce the start of our First Generation Media Professionals Initiative. We will be hosting our first event for Graduate Students in all divisions on Friday, September 22nd. Thank you Alicia Cornish White and CAMS MA student Melinda Stang for your work in getting this program off the ground.
