Excavating crews spent the month removing thousands of yards of soil from the job site. As trucks hauled away the earth, teams drove steel I-beams into the ground around the perimeter and placed heavy timbers between the beams to retain the surrounding soil.

Workers then covered the wood and steel with sheeting, which was subsequently treated with a waterproofing agent in preparation for forming the structure's subterranean foundation.
