The USC School of Cinematic Arts invites you to a conversation with recording artist MOBY
MOBY will discuss his new website,
WWW.MOBYGRATIS.COM, with film students on Friday, February 22nd, 2008. The event will be held in the George Lucas Instructional Building, Room 108, from 12:00 - 1:00PM.
The event will be moderated by SCA Sound Department Manager Richard Hyland.
MobyGratis, a new online initiative spearheaded by Moby, (who was an experimental film student in college), is focused on supporting a community that has played an instrumental role in his success and early artistic endeavors.
"Ever since college," says Moby, "I have had friends and acquaintances in the worlds of indie, experimental and non-profit film. Their biggest complaint has been that licensing music for low-budget films is almost always incredibly difficult. With that in mind I started MobyGratis. The goal is to provide free music for independent, experimental, and non-profit filmmakers. I hope that somehow this will enable filmmakers to spend their time making films and not calling up record companies trying to license music."

The website currently has an extensive library of unreleased songs, with plans to upload more music as the project moves forward. All of the music is available for free so long as it is used in a not-for-profit context. In the event that the properties find a commercial outlet, there will be a simple license provided to facilitate the "for profit" transaction. Any resulting proceeds will go to charity.
Sundance Channel supported the launch of MobyGratis with an online "Spotlight" (
http://www.sundancechannel.com/spotlights) back in early September 2007. "Spotlights" focus on people, projects and events that exemplify an independent spirit and provide a unique perspective. It included an exclusive Moby interview, a Moby student film, samples of music from MobyGratis and more. This is an ongoing, non-exclusive partnership with additional elements to be announced soon.
